Geeks Make Emily K Students Smile

This weekend there were smiles all around at the Emily K Center as a significant number of students left the Center on Sunday with fully refurbished computers for their home use.  Folks from the Kramden Institute and the Emily K Center hosted the appropriately named Geek-a-thon, where almost 140 volunteers worked all weekend to update and make ready machines the students will use for homework and studies.

Among the volunteers doing the ‘Geeking’ were some of the Emily K Scholars to College students themselves.  These high school students loved the chance to volunteer while also learning more about technology.  Carrie Clark, Executive Director of Kramden Institute, said that their organization was delighted to, “join forces to help hard-working students achieve their academic potential.” This was the second Geek-a-Thon held at the Emily K Center and if all those smiles were any indication… a very happy and successful day.

I was there on Saturday to witness the incredible assembly line of volunteers — everyone doing their assigned job and making sure the process ran smoothly — very impressive! Hope the friendly Geeks at Kramden will continue to make the Emily K Center their home away from home!

I am proud that so many volunteers participated in the Geek-a-thon and so many Emily K Scholars participated as volunteers. The computers rebuilt and refurbished this past weekend will benefit students and their families who otherwise could not afford a PC. In today’s digital age, having a way to link to digital learning, healthcare, government and commerce resources is critical to citizenship. The volunteers this weekend truly provided those who will receive computers a window to the world.

As both an Emily K board of directors member and as President and CEO of MCNC, which, with Cisco, sponsored the Geek-a-thon, I would like to personally thank our 16 MCNC volunteers who participated in the Geek-a-thon.

A HUGE thank you to the entire staff and leadership team at the Emily K Center for letting the Kramden Geeks take over your space for the weekend…again! Your support throughout the weekend undoubtedly contributed to the event’s great success.

Thank you MCNC and Cisco for your financial and volunteer support. Thank you also to the volunteers who shared part or for a few, their entire weekend with us to build and award computers to hardworking students in Durham.

Congratulations students! Keep up the hard work.
